I wrote about Goby over at AppScout, but I love the service so much I had to mention it again here. Goby is a search engine, put simply, but it’s designed to help you find things to do that are happening where you live or where you want to travel. You can use the service to find a bed and breakfast for an upcoming trip to the beach, or you can use it to plan a romantic getaway, or you can use it to find local festivals or events that are happening in your home town.
What I didn’t get into over at AppScout is how perfect this is for someone like me, who lives on their own and has something of a social life but would love to get out and see and do more things in the area more often. My big problems tend to be that I have a hard time rustling up people to go with me, and I don’t hear about a lot of these great local events, wine tastings, street festivals, and other things until they’re all over with and the success of the event has garnered some media response.
With Goby, I can look up my local wineries and find out when they’re having tastings, find a local pub that I didn’t know existed, or check out a local festival or event that I wouldn’t mind heading off to on my own. Goby is one of those services that I think is bringing something really special and hyperlocal to the Web while simultaneously offering its services to people who are traveling nationwide. The fact that the service covers all 50 US states is a huge help, and makes it just as useful if I want to go visit my friends in New York City but want to find something for us all to do while we’re there as it is if I’m bored on a weekend and want to see what’s happening close to home.
In any event, check out my full review at AppScout, and go try Goby on your own to see how it works for you!
